Not only do I love making knives, but I do it for a living.  For now, each knife I make is better than the last.  I'm learning and improving daily, but I know it won't always be that way.  A time will come when I can no longer work the way I once did, and my body and even my mind will no longer allow me to do what I once loved.

Jesus says, "Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.  Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.  Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be."

Making knives from carbon steel means I am well aware of the reality of things like rust.  Without care, a carbon steel knife will rust and eventually rust away to nothing.  Even with constant care, ancient Japanese swords must still be re-polished every 100 years or less to remove the inevitable oxidation that occurs, even under ideal conditions.  So even under the best circumstances, rust takes hold, and slowly over time, rust will consume all that I have spent my life making.  Since I understand the temporary nature of my work, I appreciate the words of Jesus, encouraging us to give more attention to our eternity than to our today.

I need to live for a world that is Rust-Free.

God so desires a personal relationship with each one of us that he is willing to speak to us in a language that we relate to at a deep level.  For me, that language is blades and steel.  Here are a few of my favorite quotes from God's word that relate to what I do:

"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."  Proverbs 27:17
"See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work..."  Isaiah 54:16
(Jesus speaking)  "He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."  Luke 22:36

Following is a series of thoughts that connect the worlds of iron, steel and blades to the world of eternity.  If you are here, my hope is that you too will understand this most unique of languages, and that God can use even a man with dirty hands to speak the truth in a way that you get.
