Military Utility

I received a call from a U.S. marine captain asking for a good, all around utility knife for a deployment to Iraq.  He had some specific ideas about how the knife could best be carried, but because this was a new knife for him and a new way of carrying it, I was concerned that the horizontal carry sheath he wanted may not work the way he wanted under all circumstances.  Also, because of practical reasons, he could not take an extra sheath, nor was there time for him to try it out and send it back for modifications, if needed.

So, I chose to make a sheath that would permit the horizontal carry he needed, not only at 0 degrees, but adjustable from 0 to 30 degrees.  The cut out in the back allows access to the adjustment screw, and also allows the belt to catch the belt loop in the center of most pants and then feed back into the sheath.  This prevents the sheath from sliding around the belt as the knife is drawn.  The sheath can also be carried vertically by using another belt loop incorporated into the sheath, although it is not visible in the photo.
